What is Sea Grant?

Established by Congress in 1966, the National Sea Grant College Program supports research, education and technology transfer that fosters sustainable use of marine resources. The 31 Sea Grant institutions are partnerships among the nation’s universities, NOAA and participating states aimed at providing solutions to coastal management and policy issues.

The New Jersey Sea Grant Program was established in 1976 and awarded Sea Grant College status in 1989. NJMSC's role as manager of New Jersey Sea Grant was codified into law by the Governor of New Jersey in December 2007.

Since its inception, New Jersey Sea Grant has awarded more than $20,000,000 in competitive grants to scientists and educators in New Jersey. Sea Grant Extension and Communications staffs reach out to stakeholders statewide to put research into practical uses and facilitate the development of science-based policy. An advisory council of regional leaders in ports commerce, tourism and recreation, and fisheries and aquaculture play a key role in guiding the direction of Sea Grant programs. To learn more about New Jersey Sea Grant, please contact Kim Kosko, Director of Communications.
