NJMSC's and NJ Sea Grant's research efforts are enhanced by the organization's access to a variety of vessels appropriate for research support, sampling, etc., from shallow to deep waters. For information about contracting with NJMSC for use of the R/V Nauvoo, contact Dr. Michael Weinstein at mweinstein@njmsc.org.
The Fleet
R/V NAUVOO
Owned and operated by the NOAA Fisheries J. J. Howard Marine Science Laboratory of Highlands, New Jersey, the NOAA Research Vessel NAUVOO is under lease to NJMSC as part of the Habitat Characterization Project, whose key objective is to characterize and map coastal marine habitats and living marine resources in the waters and wetlands of New York and New Jersey. These research activities are anticipated to take place over a 31-month period from June 1, 2007 to December 31, 2009.
The R/V NAUVOO is an inshore, fisheries and oceanographic research platform. This boat is fully-equipped to operate up to 20 nautical miles off-shore. The NAUVOO typically carries out the following operations:
- Deployment and recovery of oceanographic buoys and moorings
- Trawling, Dredging, and Deployment of Fixed Gear to support near coastal fisheries research and stock assessment
- Collection of Plankton using surface and mid-water gear
- Scientific Diving Operations
- Collection of Sediment Cores using Benthic Grabs and Gravity Corers
- Water Quality Sampling and Monitoring

R/V Hancock
A 19 ft-Privateer center console equipped with DGPS navigation, depth sounder, VHF radio, power davit, lights for nighttime work, and powered by a 90-hp Honda outboard, the R/V Hancock is an ideal platform for all estuarine needs: trawling (nets up to 16 ft), setting and retrieving traps and pots, water quality sampling, sediment collection and transporting staff and equipment to remote work sites.
Autotrophe
A 14-ft inflatable “A” frame boat with a 25-hp Evinrude outboard designed for shallow water work, the Autotrophe provides the capability of supporting gas vibracoring and sediment collection using a Peterson or ponar grab. Equipped with a DGPS and portable VHF radio, the Autotrophe is also used for water quality sampling and transporting staff and equipment to remote work sites.
Jon Boat
A flat-bottomed boat constructed of aluminum with 3 bench seats, primarily used for fishing. It is powered by an outboard gas motor and, because its hull is nearly flat, use is limited to calmer waters. Maximum capacity is 3 people or 426 lbs. (626 lbs. including motor and gear). |
