About NJMSC

The New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium (NJMSC) was founded in 1969 as a cooperative center for the study of marine and environmental science. Today, NJMSC is one of the largest alliances of its kind in the United States, boasting a membership of nearly two dozen colleges and universities. On December 20 2007, New Jersey Governor Jon Corzine signed legislation into law (Chap 206 Title 52) that established NJMSC as a body corporate and recognized the Consortium′s role in implementing the New Jersey Marine Science Master Plan.

For nearly 40 years, the New Jersey Marine Sciences Consortium (NJMSC) has served the State and the region by developing innovative programs designed to resolve coastal issues, develop marine technology, formulate science–based policy, and improve science literacy among its citizens.

NJMSC contributes leading research in the field of marine and environmental science through its independent research programs and managing the New Jersey Sea Grant Program, part of a national effort that funds competitive research focusing on specific priority areas.

NJMSC Education Programs provide equal opportunity for all New Jersey students to learn about the marine environment. Curricula range from Pre-K through the graduate student level. Nearly 30,000 participants–students, their families, teachers, Scouts and the general public–take part annually in NJMSC Education Programs and special events.

The mission of NJMSC is to provide leadership in the advancement of marine interests of New Jersey, by promoting sustainability of its coastal resources, and facilitating effective technology transfer from science to practical uses.
